For the sake of the environment it is beneficial to have your lights switched off, as often as possible. Street lighting, however, cannot just be turned off to save energy and electricity bills. Or can they?

A Chinese businessman is planning exactly this for Chengdu, the capital of southwestern China’s Sichuan province. But instead of letting the city sink into nightly darkness, he wants to launch a satellite as an artificial, glowing celestial body which directs the out-of-sight Sun’s rays onto the dark streets. According to The Register, the satellite will be ready to be shot into the sky in 2020.
